Safer Faster Defense & Progressive Defense Training are partnering up for the 2026 PDN Training Tour to offer our Community Preparedness & Defense Curriculi.
“Purpose and Community is the Antidote.”
In these divisive times, it’s up to us to create and foster a sense of community that transcends artificial lines of demarcation that have become so sensationalized in recent years. If we can create a community of people from diverse backgrounds with a variety of skillsets and knowledge, we can work together to support one another with our common core values at the center.
The inspiration is from the Mutual Aid Societies In 17th Century Europe, neighborhoods were organized around skill-based tradesmen, such as the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick maker. These communities were small and fulfilled all the needs of the neighborhood, fostering a system of mutual support. As communities expanded and technology advanced, the cultural focus shifted more to the individual or the family unit and there was less reliance on neighbors.
The modern version of a cooperative society, the Mutual Aid Society (MAS), seeks to develop a community-based network that connects people with a combination of skill-based volunteerism and need-based assistance. Importantly, MASs do not operate as businesses, but are instead rooted in the foundation of mutual support. They may be region-wide, city-wide, county-wide, neighborhood-wide, or even building-wide.
Our Goal at SFD and Progressive Defense Training is to share our experience of forming our Mutual Aid Society and to offer training opportunities to help create, strengthen and grow your group/Chapter into an effective MAS.

The value of this type of training is that the knowledge and skills the student gains will be extremely useful in realistic emergency situations, such as the partial collapse of services during a natural disaster, a small-scale, localized, short-term violent event, or a longer period of economic or civil unrest.
For instance, emergency medical training is imperative for all emergency situations, localized or broad, and Small Unit Teamwork skill-set can help you move around safely as you are looking for resources or safe havens during catastrophic events like fires, earthquakes, or tornadoes. Likewise developing independent food, energy and medical resources will help you and your group navigate through similar events without having to rely on outside help.
The MAS curriculum serves the individual and the community. The explicit benefit for the individual is that achieving a higher level of skill (Response Efficacy) and confidence (Self Efficacy) will empower the students to be better prepared to protect themselves and their loved ones in multiple contexts. The implicit benefit of their improved confidence and sense of agency is that it will allow the students to better understand and control their emotions and avoid falling prey to divisive narratives and drama.
The benefit for the group is that these activities will help to create and foster a more cohesive, close-knit, and capable community. After gaining knowledge and confidence, each student/Group can become a “force multiplier” for their area, connecting people, expanding resources, and building more resilient and safer communities.
As an added bonus: preparedness is good therapy! We fear most what we don’t know—it’s human nature and understandable. The solution: Train More, Fear less.
Notably, because of the nature of the training and the scenarios we are preparing for, an important topic we have weaved through every training event we hold is a strong focus on mindset and emotional health prior, during, and after a survival event.
Mindset & Mindfulness are essential aspects of optimal performance in times of stress as well as in times of recovery, and they come in handy when dealing with the current onslaught of bad news and absurdity.
